Opportunities and challenges

Challenges

  • In the first half of 2023, Vietnam's furniture export turnover reached only USD 640 million, down 45.6% on the same period in 2022.
  • Exports of timber and forest products in August 2023 brought in USD 1.19 billion, down 21.5% on August 2022. Although down 42.27% year on year, the United States remains Vietnam's largest export market for timber and wood products.
  • Wood furniture exports are heading into a phase of fiercer competition, with the burden of origin and quarantine requirements. Vietnam needs a different approach to exporting timber and wood products.

Opportunities

  • Wood pellets: Wood pellet imports rose more than 40% in 2022. Total volume reached about 4.4 million tonnes, with Vietnam the main supplier, contributing over 50% of the volume.
  • Assembled flooring: The value of these imports jumped noticeably, with China, Vietnam and Austria the leading suppliers — about 35% higher than the same period last year.
  • Plywood: Plywood imports into Japan rose considerably, about 35% higher than in previous years.

Japan — a market of potential for Vietnam's wood industry

  • Japan is the partner that has signed the most bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements (FTAs) with Vietnam.
  • Bilateral trade between Vietnam and Japan has been actively supported through Japanese foreign direct investment (FDI) and official development assistance (ODA) in Vietnam.
  • For many years Japan has consistently been a leading investment and ODA partner in Vietnam.
  • Vietnam and Japan have many opportunities to cooperate in trade because the two economies complement each other.
  • The export and import structures of the two countries are clearly complementary, with no direct competition.
  • Many of the goods Japan needs to import are precisely the goods Vietnam is strong in — the wood industry among them.
  • Trade between Vietnam and Japan will be supported further by new free trade agreements such as CPTPP and RCEP.
  • Vietnam has been an attractive destination for Japanese business investment, thanks to market size, growth potential and a stable political and social situation.
